No Reason for Saving It

NO REASON FOR SAVING IT

1) We were long haired kids in a VW bus
Folks not liking diff'rent made fun of us
But we had the music; we had our songs
It was all we needed to carry us along

Singing words we really believed
Maybe we were more than just a little naive
But songs of peace, and love and hope
Said what we needed to say

The band would play on a Saturday night
Loaded up that bus with gear and people packed tight
That old VW did just forty-five
We were feeling so alive

We had a sense, life was what you made it
No matter how it pushed us, in different ways
Spending it all; no reason for saving it
Thinking it would never end

2) Soon the Summer of Love, was behind us
Uncle Sam kept trying to find us
For that crazy war, over in Viet Nam
Most of us had a much different plan

With a wife and a baby on the way
I settled down and prepared to stay
While some headed north to Canada
I knew we wouldn't run

3) Thought it best to volunteer
Hoping that would keep me somewhere in the rear
Didn't want my baby not knowing his dad
And that was how it began

Came home from those days, a family man
Now with two sons, not much of a plan
The road was rarely straight that brought us here
Surely had days, filled with fear

BRIDGE: Found the music in life is what held steady
It helped us to carry on

I still try playing some Saturday nights
Often travel alone; sometimes with my wife
Rolling down the road now, at sixty-five
Still feeling so alive

And you know, it's true, life is what you make it
No matter how it pushes us in different ways
It's yours to spend; no reason for saving it
You know, you've got today
