Purple Tulips (Gapless)

When she's afraid
It always starts with a quiet tapping on my bedroom window
I open it up and ask, "Do you wanna talk about it?"
But she always says no
So I do the only thing I know how
And that's paint a picture of a better place

I tell her to close her eyes
I tell her we're going somewhere new
I tell her it's somewhere far away
A field of purple tulips that go on for miles
I describe the sunbeams
They shine down in soft, thick rays all over the field
And they make her skin glisten
And reflect off the amber in her hair

There are no cities in this world
Just rows of violet tulips
And white puffs of pollen particles dancing all around
There are trees, too, in the distance
And they sway back and forth
And they're emerald green and tall and strong
And then there's the mountains
They're also a brilliant lavender shade
Snow capped, of course
And so sturdy, and permanent, and incredible
I describe the small, warm breeze tickling the hairs on her arms
And the clouds passing by overhead
And the big breaths of mountain air
And the feeling of freedom

As I'm saying this
It's the part where she remembers it's just a story
And realizes that, like everything else, it's fleeting
I see the smallest tear slip from beneath her closed eyelid
I take her hand, and she opens her eyes
They're glittering with the most beautiful sadness
Of someone who understands pain a little too well
But in this world, she's big and safe
With the sun, and the warmth
And the purple tulips, and the sky
And though it's just a made up place in our minds
She can close her eyes and find herself there
