I can keep it together in front of your face
But the minute you leave it all falls right out of place
I wish I could tell you but it would be a waste
It would tear us apart with no one in your place
And I used to wonder if we're just afraid
That all that we have would just disappear
But now it seems clear that that's not the case
You were never here beyond a cold first embrace

And so much time's passed since you were around
Yet I feel like my heart is still safely bound
To an idea of you that I just can't escape
An unprovoked state of mind that I can never erase
Could it ever be true, or am I just sentimental
That I think things can change if my foot's to the metal
Even if you're not here, I can take
Any pain for you

I don't want to be that man in your phone
Who doesn't mean much at all
Because even through lenses and time and a mirror
Some things never change, and don't become clearer
Sometimes there's no such thing as more than a friend
Yet I'll still remain, I can wait for the end
While I just sit and pretend
That my heart can mend

And if I heard you get up
In the middle of the night
Would I do anything I can
To keep you here
As you leave from my side
