Parents

I found a photo of my Dad
I'd forgotten all about that brilliant smile that he had
He was only 24
On the day he married Mum in those last years of the war

He never got to meet my kids
And even now the mention of his name leaves me in bits
All too quick his time was done
Never got the chance to say the things a father tells a son

I sat and watched my Mother's grief
Sat in silent disbelief
She played the widow to an art
To hide the breaking of her heart

In that same photo was my Mum
In blissful unawareness of the mother she'd become
She was only 21
On that day in August in the warm South London sun

She hid the crushing hurt she felt
In solitary moments she would melt
Never one to show her tears
I know she missed him through the years

Now after alls been said and done
They're together now
In the spirit sun
