Career Day

Career day, second grade, worksheet going 'round
Says, "What do you want to be when you grow up?"
The crayons go flying as they sketch their futures out
In self-portraits based on hope and luck

Too many presidents are in this classroom
With the wrong religion, sex, or skin tone
Singers and movie stars sittin' in every chair
With crooked teeth and lacking muscle tone

You can be whatever you wanna be
But maybe you oughta rethink being that
In the land of always chasing down a dream
You should set your sights on one that you can grasp
'Cause when the time comes
It seems like every other month's
Career day

College fair day in your high school
Time to decide which one will be the best
Pack your resume just short of being a lie
Your future might hinge off of this next test

No work experience, that sounds like points off
And that's way too many B's for an Ivy League
Extracurriculars got to be all filled
'Cause school is not the only thing, you see

You can be whatever you wanna be
But maybe you oughta rethink being that
In the land of always chasing down a dream
You should set your sights on one that you can grasp
'Cause when the time comes
It seems like every other month's
Career day

Thank you for your time
We'll send a call back when your life is figured out
Is figured out
You don't look like the headshot that you sent
I think we'll have to go a different route

College grad now, and what am I gonna do?
Is this what I drew in crayon on my worksheet?
Guess I can always decide to start anew
And crumple that paper right beneath my feet

You can be whatever you wanna be
But maybe you oughta rethink being that
But maybe the problem is not the being but the wanting
And you can be just who you are just where you're at
'Cause when the time comes
Oh no no no
Oh when the time comes
When the time comes
You won't have to worry 'bout
Career day
