Long Was the Crawl
On the darkened underpass the mules of liberty collapse
As dogs of peace deal out their lawful lashing
A saint above the crowd draws a map
Which leads them to a tranquil sense of crashing
The forefathers of folly barricade the lofty seal
Frightened by the land they confiscated
The sons and daughters hide their whispered tears
When buried 'neath the soil they cultivated
Well the sky was heavy
The wind was sharp
And the ground was marked
With shame on that day
Long was the crawl to freedom's gate
Everywhere the blanket falls over the blonded roads
The questions of the dead are soon forsaken
With nothing built to last, the eagle sows
Conclusions to be reaped and thus mistaken
Those not born to lose are taught to buy another day
Spent in peace made free by deepest hatred
But peace has a price for those who cannot wait and will not wait
Only paid when all are devastated
Yes, the starless sailors guided by
The drowning night
They crossed many shores
Long was the crawl to freedom's door
Over freedom's gate stands a tower and its light
Lined with many guns forever aiming
As volleys tear apart the arid sky
And fall below, the flames and powder raining
Beneath the clouds, heard through the barks of bullets, the howls of hail
Comes the sounds of freedom, loose and thrashing
Held within the arms of palest day
With momentary colours brightly flashing
O, the timeless soldiers marching on
To the failing dawn
They know what they saw
Long was the crawl to freedom's maw
Time is young as it repeats the many shallow steps
Taken to an end that was beginning
As triumphs cost much more and mean much less
To dying men who thought that they were winning
Do not rest on any promised word or pearly pawn
Quickly shattered by the hollow gavel
You must see the rigid path you're on
And know that in the end it must unravel
Well the sky will be scarred
The wind will be high
The ground will sigh
They say, on that day
Long was the crawl to freedom's gate
As dogs of peace deal out their lawful lashing
A saint above the crowd draws a map
Which leads them to a tranquil sense of crashing
The forefathers of folly barricade the lofty seal
Frightened by the land they confiscated
