The Difference - Commentary
I wanna encourage everybody to pick a copy of Tyler Rich's new album
"Two Thousand Miles". And yes, when I say pick up a copy
It can be downloaded, you can save it on your favourite streaming platform
Or you can go and get the physical CD
We are talking about every song on the album and the next one
You've heard it, it was on the radio, it's called "The Difference"
And what I thought was interesting about this song, Tyler
Is that we had a conversation one time and I asked you
If you could only play one song for people to kind of tell them who you are
And what you are about musically, you told me it'll be "The Difference"
And the reason that's interesting is because you didn't like the song
And so, I'm curious, you made it your first single sort of your introduction of world
You said this is the one you'll play for people so they could know you better
Tell me what it is about "The Difference"
That makes it such an important and impactful song for you?
So "The Difference" was an interesting song for me
Because I was four hours into a pitch meeting
And we're still trying to figure out
You know, we had all these incredible songs, we loved all these songs
And we're like, oh this will be number two, this will be number three
What is going to be number one?
And we went through this pitch meeting to pitch meeting
Trying to find something that's fell different
And "The Difference" did, right away it fell like me
It felt like my inspirations, like a lot of my beach vibes inspiration stuff
Outside of your typical Kinney chestnut, and what not
You know, it comes from guys like Jason Mraz and maybe a little bit of John Mayer
And it embodied all of that immediately
And then when the chorus hit and they flipped the words at the end of the course
And it so cleverly flipped it to, I want to be the difference
So there's a difference between love you and I love you and I want to be the difference
I was like, yes, please, right now, 100%, this is it
And, you know, Sabina would always text me that first year of our relationship
If I ever said love you, she would always respond, I love you
And she'd say, there's a difference. And so as soon as I heard the song
You know, Garth Brooks gave me some advice when I first met him
And he said, "Whatever you do, write the best songs you can
But always record the best songs you've ever heard"
And it was in that moment I realized what he meant
Because it's not only like one of the better songs that I had heard
Like in this whole thing, collection of hundreds and hundreds of pitches
But it was something that was so relatable to Sabina
And I that I knew that it would come across and be portrayed that way
Every time I sang it, every time somebody watched the music video
Every time they would feel and hear it as if it was my song
And it's hard as a new writer, tt's hard as a new artist to get outside songs
And be like, swallow your pride a little bit
And be like, I'm going to record something I didn't write
But as soon as you do-
And everybody told me this, Dustin Lynch told me this, Jump Party told me this
They're like, dude, as soon as you do, it's yours
And as soon as I recorded that song, as soon as I had the cut at my house
And I heard it for the first time, it was my song
It didn't matter if I wrote it, it didn't matter that Devin Dawson or Red Aikens, Jacob Durette
Everybody wrote it, (Betty Burgess)
But it becomes your song
Well, I mentioned earlier that the title of this album is "Two Thousand Miles"
It represents the distance between you and your wife in LA and Nashville
As you both pursue your careers
But what I want to know is how far into your relationship did you realize
You wanted to start changing the semantics from I miss you and I miss your face
So when did that happen? And who said, I love you first?
Oh, man! We said it pretty quick
We were pretty much all in very fast
We have always had a vacation style relationship
As we've continued to live "Two Thousand Miles" apart even though now we're married
Two separate careers in two states
When we see each other, it's usually shows festivals, vacations, et cetera
And we dove in that fast as well
It's always been exciting since the beginning
And we said, I love you within the first couple of months
And that sounds crazy to people listening right now, I know that
It sounds crazy to me saying it, but we truly felt it, and it's only ever gotten stronger
It was one of those immediate, crazy bonds
And, you know, I love you and I'm in love with you
Those are two crazy things that say to somebody
But we meant that even if we were still falling, we still meant it at the beginning
I don't think it's crazy at all, look where you ended up
And this is Tyler Rich "The Difference"
You'll find it on his "Two Thousand Miles" album which is out now
