Affection

Wait...

I've been feeling pretty lonely painting portraits of full-length mirrors
I've been searching without direction
A vampire painting their own reflection

Waiting will be the death of me

I've craved affection for my entire life
Like a ship steering towards the rocks without its guiding light
Unless told Otherwise
Don't become attached
But I always do exactly that

Now the birds sing, especially the blue jays
Hinting at affection, chanting out the coordinates
Then the cat, of course, sets its course to the chorus of singing birds
Claws their beak, killed with teeth, and then it's placed in front of me
Now I'm coerced in a corner by a serpent in a circle
Cutting incorrect shapes in the center of an apple
Pull a rabbit from the foxhole, Light a candle in my castle
Let the cattle graze the pasture, left me drowning underwater

It's an honor to choke on these feathers
But I want a red bird, not a dead blue bird

I want affection, not just attention
I want the painting, not just the portrait
I want the voyage, not just the shipwreck
I want the feeling without the addiction
Isn't this what you've always wanted
How does it feel to have your questions answered
When I'm done and feel complete
I see my reflection watching me wait

I've envisioned Affection as a blood red bird
Slicing my heart with its feathers as sharp as swords
The blue bird taunts in songs as I try to escape
But I'm captured in my own cage and I'm told it's too late

Unless told Otherwise... wait
