Rabbit

You'll never be the Rabbit of my dreams
Is this hibernation heard
Are you worth your weight in gold
You can hide underground
But I'll still be around

Can you see the smoke signals I light when I can't sleep at night

It's not your fault
You'll get what you deserve
You're not the Rabbit I thought

As I close in on the Rabbit running Hare paced
I extend my hands to capture it and it darts abruptly to the left
I lose my footing and trip and fall flat on my own face

Retracting my hand from the middle of your palm
I realize what I've done wrong
You did all that you thought you could
As a decoy in a cage of wood

In the urgency of backtracking thought
I begin to question if the Rabbit I was chasing was actually a Hare
I rise from my stumble with bleeding knees
Searching for burrows
And just as I start to succumb to my weakness
I lock eyes with the Rabbit across the meadow
It opens its jaws and lets out a horrific scream
And I combust
Not a Rabbit
Nor a Hare
But a witch in lagomorph fur!

You're not the Rabbit I thought
