Solace

What's it like to be right all the damn time
I never knew of true gut feeling until you arrived
You kept wishing for a better past, but you knew you could not have it back
In the hand-written book that I borrowed I saw their name etched into the cover
In the back was a photo of the ghost from my dream
We didn't look alike but we're just the same

You say that your Solace is that you've done no harm
But I've heard otherwise from the talk of the town

The secrets that bound you to circles of the neighborhood
I found out by waltzing in the moonlight with a werewolf
The promise of a future that you disfigured
With your ventriloquist fingers on the vicarious trigger

But how about the love that you would swear of
I've heard it was just never enough for you
Never enough

You shut me down when I brought up how you really felt about them
Was it the way I said their name
Was it the way you made me wait
You tell tall tales that fell flat on their back
And when they were revealed you had covered your tracks

I noticed you burned all the notes you had written
Your solace in a bell jar in a garden of ashes

They waited by the books you suggested
Weighted by the hooks of their depression
While you were away so much had changed
They knew you once but never again
They tried to talk but you never would listen
Repeating history of that feeling
That you caused that you had nurtured
Like something dead fed to a buzzard

And as they take their final breath
Were you lingering on their thoughts
No one will know the extent of your vicious hands
But you have to live with the damage of what you've done

Your solace will never know they weren't the only one
