Local Park

We used to sit in the grass
At our local park
Watching the road
We'd sit there until dark
The autumn leaves
Flow down from the trees
And surround you and me
Sitting around
Talking bout useless things
Like how you're doing at school
The weather's been cool
Then the silence takes over
Put my head against your shoulder

A few years down the line
I don't speak to anybody from that time
I walk past the place we used to share
Breathing in the autumn air
And I pass by an old mutual friend
And casually bring up how you're doing
Apparently you met somebody new
You've been together for a year or two

Then later that night
I went down to the store
Got my earphones in
As I walk to the door
And when I walk in
All I see is your face
Oh my god you really haven't aged
And as I'm filled with so much surprise
I completely forget to recognise
The girl you've got your arm around
I've never seen her in this town

A few years down the line
I come back to this town for a second time
As I walk around, everything looks the same
It doesn't really look like anything's changed
I go back to that same store
The one I saw you and her in before
By chance I see your face again
You look just as young as you did then
But all it takes is one look down
I see what's on your hand now
Just another reminder
That we never worked out
But then again I've never seen you look
As happy as you do now
I guess you've got a good life
I guess she's your new paradise

A few years down the line
I sit in the grass one more time
Breathing in the summer air
As I contemplate and I compare
The last time that I sat here
With a much better atmosphere
I bet you don't even think about
How much my life changed
When you weren't around

But maybe sometime down the line
I can find the same happy life
Stop wasting all my years
On all the what ifs and
What could have beens
After today, I'll forget about all the times

We used to sit in the grass
At our local park
