The Next Six Months

It's monsoon season again
And your glimmer and your shine
Might be gone for good this time
With these tokens of affection unspent
And please, could you tell me when I'm wrong?
'Cause some things, I can't seem to sleep off
No matter how hard I try
I spent the last six months in the trenches
With platitudes scrawled on napkins
Sorted, anointed, forgotten
To be found in the pocket of my jacket in the fall
And by then I'll see
That the things I need
I never really needed at all
And I think I'll be leaving in the spring
When the world comes alive
And it's calling out your name
There will be one less cloud in the sky
And please don't tell me when I'm right
You know victories can be losses, too, sometimes
Where sleeping dogs should lie
I'll spend the next six months relearning everything
And I'll scrawl in the bark your name and my name
And acknowledge my soul sometimes
'Cause it's a long way to heaven from here
But it's about 20 hours to the ocean
If I leave right now
And the roads stay clear
I could be there tomorrow morning
