Hemlock Song

We hike this path one by one
Through giant tulip-poplars yet to succumb
To our greed ignorant of truth
Try to imagine it ain't no use
Hemlocks departed our loss to claim
Bare trunks impart our hollow blame
Dappled shadows once moist and cool
Now brightened by the light created by fools
Fingertips trace each sacred ring
Palms grace bark lingering
Little Santeetlah washes memories down the stream
Skin and bark in understanding
My feet feel the tempo of a funeral dirge
For the preemptive rot yet to emerge
In the bark the leaves and those that were here first
Stoic to the burdens of our thirst
Years yet given we ached and cried
And endlessly despaired to set things right
So our grandchildren feel the awe and ease
Of standing in the shade of the hemlock trees
Fingertips trace each sacred ring
Palms grace bark lingering
Little Santeetlah washes memories down the stream
Skin and bark in understanding
