Verify My Existence

In the back seat
No one's looking at me
But rather their phones
I'd rather it be I they see
Instead of messages from people
That I don't know
Why can't I find a place in society
No matter where I find myself
I feel alone
Just want to be somewhere I am seen
People seem to look through me
Wherever I go
No other reason to take this thing
I happen to have a vehicle that I own
But next to me'd be an empty seat
Yet commuters refuse to
Take out their earphones

In the gallery
Where all the seats are facing inwardly
Keep my head up purposefully
Yet not once is eye contact
Made with me
I've been taking this line for weeks
And have yet to confirm
That I exist
I hear the bell for my stop make a ring
But the driver doesn't open the doors
To let me exit
Still not sure if this is but a dream
It all too eerily similar to reality
I really hope that I'm only sleeping
Or at the very least that
I'm just overthinking
In the back seat
No one's looking at me
But rather the wall
I'd rather it be I they see
Instead of into space
When they're taking a call

Please take your earphones
Out for a minute
I need to verify that I exist
If you could only acknowledge my presence
I'd no longer need
To take public transit

I lay awake in my bed at night
Anticipating dreaming of that bus route
I can never escape that ride
Forever stuck on this half-hour commute

Please take your earphones
Out for a minute
I need to verify that I exist
If you could only acknowledge my presence
I'd no longer need
To take public transit
