Poète Maudit

Most artists are tortured internally
Why would I want to go down that road
Doesn't sound desirable to me
Van Gogh was plagued by
Psychiatric ailment throughout his life
So much so, to the point where
He cut off his own ear with a knife

That doesn't sound so pleasant to me
So why are so many inspired by his artistry
So is it really that great to be
Immortalized after you die
Half of the people that have been
Didn't even seem happy to be alive

Why do we really insist on
Romanticizing mental illness
Or being offed by some
Unforeseen accident
As long as there's merit in
Whatever kills us
Neglecting basic needs like Michelangelo
Who didn't eat or drink and always slept in his clothes
And wrote to his father that there
Wasn't even an hour of happiness
That he had ever known

That doesn't sound so pleasant to me
So why are so many inspired by his artistry
So is it really that great to be
Immortalized after you die
Half of the people that have been
Didn't even seem happy to be alive
If you believe that most artists thrive
Then you've been living a lie

Brian Jones, Janis Joplin
Amy Winehouse, Jim Morrison
Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix
Ron McKernan, Richy Edwards
Mia Zapata, Robert Johnson
Bryan Ottoson, Chris Austin
D. Boon, Kristen Pfaff
Jean-Michel Basquiat
Gary Thain, Pete Ham
Dave Alexander, Freaky Tah
Dickie Pride, Leslie Harvey
Rudy Lewis, Finbarr Donnely
Alexander Bashlachev
Pete de Freitas, Dimitar Voev
Damien Morris, Richard Turner
Malcolm Hale, Zenon De Fleur

They didn't seem so happy to me
But so many are inspired by their artistry
If I'm placed in that year based category
Then that means that
I'm on my last three

And if I can make it past twenty-seven
I think that I would be pretty
Pleasantly surprised that I didn't
End up meeting my demise
Walking into the ocean at high tide
