A Frightened Child

They raised you with such passion, no effort spared to
Remove rough edges, always soften
But too much blind devotion, did not prepare you
For life which can be harsh so often

So late you learnt the rules, their kindness was too cruel
You never had a chance at all

You're choosing paths of dark or light
You're choosing paths that may be wrong or may be right
And when they're right there's little cost
Too many wrong and you are now forever lost
You always wanted to be seen
As adult, free and wild
But it was just a fragile shell around
A frightened child

You tried so many ways to hide it
So many ways to hide
You didn't want it known
A little girl had never grown

Because your wants and fancies, were all provided
You just receiving, never earning
The early roads you followed, were all decided
To make your own way, never learning

They kept you from the school of life, so like a fool
You never had a chance at all

You're choosing paths of dark or light
You're choosing paths that may be wrong or may be right
And when they're right there's little cost
Too many wrong and you are now forever lost
You always wanted to be seen
As adult, free and wild
But it was just a fragile shell around
A frightened child
A frightened child
