Stella

SONG FOR STELLA.
Stella was always a charmer
I reckon,chirpy and glad,
Praying over my bed .
She must have been 40,
And I was just four,
And she was life's meaning,
A warm hand on my forhead.

I was holding that hand as
We ran for the bus,
On her way to confession,
At our church in Dundrum .
I'd begged her to put on
Her red high heel shoes.
She giggled and said,
"hope we don't have to run".

Some nights before
I fall asleep,
Some place inside
I hear them speak.
Mum and Dad and
Old friends deceased,
We all meet and chat
Inside of me.

"I've torn my new stockings ",
She quietly sobbed,
and tears streamed down
Her powder-puff cheeks.
"I bought them on Friday
And now there just ruined .
I'd been planning and saving
To buy them all week".

Though I was four I knew
She'd never cry
For the cuts on her knee
Or her shoe's broken heel.
I had'nt read Yeats yet
But I'd learnt sure enough
That a pity beyond telling
Lies hidden in the heart
Of true love.

Some nights before I fall asleep
I see her smile and hear her speak
"All men should know that it's their Mother who taught them how
To love another".
